The Paper Cutouts series is an exploration of form, color, and negative space, inspired by Henri Matisse’s later works.

Originating in 2020, during a period of intense self-discovery, these pieces reflect a process of stripping things down to their essence—both visually and emotionally.

By working with cut-out shapes, layering, and creating bold contrasts, this series examines how simplicity can be a powerful storytelling tool.

From the artist: The Dancer, Perceived is an act of defiance—a work of resistance against the male gaze and the ways in which female voices are often overlooked. This piece shines a light on a pervasive imbalance: the way men often place greater validity on their own perceptions, reasoning, and interpretations, disregarding the lived realities women attempt to communicate. The craft itself—cutting and carving—becomes a metaphor for this tension, embodying both precision and fragility, as though the dancer herself is being shaped by rough external forces.

The Dancer, Perceived stands as a reflection of the broader struggles women continue to face, from the dismissal of their autonomy in personal relationships to the larger societal structures that perpetuate these imbalances. In a time when hostility toward women’s rights is resurging, this piece serves as a call to reclaim agency, to be seen not as an object of perception but as a force of resistance.

PAPER CUTOUTS

PAPER CUTOUTS INSPIRED BY MATISSE;

Each composition is a study in balance and movement, where silhouettes interact and unfold dynamically within the space. The cutouts become figures—fluid, expressive, and unrestricted—representing a search for identity through abstraction. The physical act of cutting and arranging echoes a sense of deconstruction and reconstruction, mirroring personal transformation.

This series marks an early but pivotal point in my practice, where I began to experiment with how artistic language could be both deeply personal and universally resonant. The cutouts embody a freedom of expression that would later evolve into more complex explorations of culture, heritage, and resistance.
